An inquest has revealed that a British tourist in Jamaica tragically passed away after attempting to consume all 21 cocktails listed on a bar’s menu as part of a challenge, accompanied by two Canadian women.
The tourist, identified as Timothy Southern, 53, was vacationing in May 2022 with his children, sister, and other relatives at the Royal Decameron Club Caribbean in Saint Ann, a popular tourist destination in Jamaica.
According to the findings of the inquest, Southern had been consuming beer and brandy earlier in the day when he decided to join a pair of Canadian tourists who were undertaking the 21-cocktail challenge to celebrate one of their birthdays. The purpose of the challenge was to complete all 21 cocktails before midnight.
The purpose of the inquest was to establish the sequence of events throughout the day and determine the precise cause of death.
During the proceedings, it was revealed that Southern managed to consume 12 of the cocktails before deciding to return to his hotel room. Concern arose when his family members discovered him there, as reported by the U.K. publication Stoke Sentinel.
One of Southern’s relatives provided testimony during the inquest, recounting the distressing scene: “He was lying on his back, struggling to breathe. I placed him in the recovery position and urgently called for an ambulance. He was making choking sounds, and as soon as I positioned him correctly, he vomited. Despite repeatedly calling his name, there was no response.”
The relative further stated that even when a nurse arrived to assist, minimal action was taken. No ambulance had been summoned, and the nurse failed to intervene effectively to save Southern’s life, according to their account.
